Celebrating The Life of Samuel Mutua Kivuitu

You definitely know him.

He was born in Wamunyu on 16th February, 1939. He attended  Mbaikini Primary School between 1946 and 1954 and later joined Machakos Boys in 1955 to 1958. He furthered his education at the Makerere (1959-1960) and Dar es Salam (1961-1964) Universities and majored in law studies.

He later got married to Priscilla Ndululu and were blessed with 7 children- 2 daughters and 5 sons, he then moved to Ruaraka where his family still lives.

He was employed as Satate Counsel in 1964 before he became a resident magistrate and later moved to Private practice in 1968. He has been a member of the Law Society of Kenya.

He will be remembered for fighting for the rights of domestic workers, which was his onset mission as he joined Parliament as MP for Parklands (later extended to Westlands) in 1969 though he later lost his seat to Njoroge Mungai in 1974.

He was in charge of the Kenya General Elections in 1997and 2002 after he was appointed by the retired President Daniel Arap Moi to replace Zacchaeus Chesoni who was in charge of the 1992 elections. He also was in charge of the 2005 constitutional referendum.

He was later reappointed to his post by President Kibaki ahead of the 2007 general elections which lead to the 2007-2008 post election violence. He was blamed for favoring and helping Kibaki win the elections, that some communities rioted in support of Raila Odinga. Later on Kenya was back on her feet, as a coalition Government and peace reigned though we still have IDPs to date who have not been resettled.

Although some Kenyans and some societies still put the blame on his shoulders, Kivuitu has been recently seen on various media channels standing firm on his ground, that he is innocent and that he was just doing his job. I believe that we Kenyans had unsolved issues and used that time to let it out, and since we had to blame someone, he served best sacrificial lamb. He still had a number of supporters who believed his name should not be part of the reasons that led to the unfortunate happenings of the 2007-2008 post election violence.

He had been fighting esophagus cancer for some time, went to India for treatment, and later came back to Nairobi when he announced that he was cleared of cancer. He passed on, on the night of 25th February, 2013at the M.P Shah hospital in Parklands. I would like to wish his Family strength  at this trying moment in their lives. May his soul REST IN ETERNAL PEACE.
