My 12-year career journey: A reflection
As I reflect on my 12-year journey across various sectors— including private sector (from real estate, PR agencies, hospitality, consultancy), non-profit, and now government— I've gathered invaluable insights that I wish I had known at the start of my career.
Mind you, it took me a while to land a permanent job that I was reffered to as a professional volunteer. I am eternally grateful because volunteering shaped me. In my first 'real' job, I was featured on Parents Magazine Africa- Phenomenal Women- "Don't sit waiting for a job, volunteer and doors will open". I was a very young woman in a managerial position in a real estate company then. Doors did open, and I pray they stay open.
Each experience has shaped my perspective, and I'm eager to share these lessons in the hopes that they resonate with those just starting on their professional paths. I am a work in progress and enthusiastic about the future. So, before diving into my insights, I urge everyone to prioritize what truly matters: go home and love your family.
1. For as long as you're healthy- wake up, show up, and stay positive. Positivity is the hardest skill to master.
2. Dont focus on promotions, master your skill or cement an art you can be identified with or trusted to achieve change with.
3. It's not a competition with who tries to compete with you, help as many as you can to be confident in themselves towards a greater goal.
4. You were not here before. But, you are here now. Previous failures are not yours. But, surely, no matter how small, what legacy do you leave behind now?
5. Not everyone will like you or see your potential. It's not your job to make them. But, success is the best revenge.
6. But, remember, if you're only doing it to revenge, don't do it at all.
7. Look at hiw far you have come. Look at where you are now. There's a whole brighter future ahead.
8. Be proud of your milestones. Showcase your achievements, boldy. Be confident in your journey. Always make new and meaningful connections.
9. You may get in your head sometimes, but don't stay there too long. It can get ugly. Sometimes, you make your own enemy of progress, just by overthinking. Be kind to yourself.
10. They may doubt your potential. But, don't be one of them.
11. Learn from everyone you can. Every chance you get. No matter your personal biases against them.
12. Fix that attitude as soon as you can. It's an office, not a family home, no matter how much you're told it's family.
13. Your mental health comes first. But, don't be the reason, someome else's is threatened.
14. Family comes first. It may be great in the office but family will stand with you in moments your office can't. But, if you're lucky, you get to make family everywhere you go, and some lasting relationships do come from work.
15. Tables turn. Treat everyone with respect. Even those who don't.
16. You are disposable. Don't kill yourself. Fully serve in the best way you can, but don't let your health or body pay the price. When you die, you will be replaced immediately because life moves on.
17. Remember to stay professional even when pushed to your limits.
18. Smile to as many people as possible. It's infectious.
19. When uncomfortable, be the most confident.
20. Stay grounded.
21. A tough pill - You don't know everything. Allow yourself to learn. You can always learn something from anyone, even your juniors or someone younger.
22. Be an easy person to work with. Be the person you wish to have at work. Embrace emotional intelligence, basic courtesy, and people skills. This does not, however, mean, be too nice.
23. Master the art of gratitude, especially in small things, steps, and tiniest achievements.
Bonus: When you finally become a boss, be the boss you wish you had. Be better. Do better. Teach as much as you can.
