How did you end up in Turkana and other stories...

How did you end up in Turkana???

I get this question a looot!

I guess many ask this because of the preconceived biases based on what they have either watched on telly or heard. It's a simple lack of exposure to the beauty of Turkana. If anything, I encourage questions about Turkana so people can learn. It's either that (free) or you come visit (learn).

So....

My name is Esther Mwangi, and yes I am from Turkana. To make it short, my Dad came to Turkana 54 years ago as an Accounting Clerk. Mum followed 11 years later. The two have together made a name for themselves and have become a great part of the community. That means, I was born, bred, educated, and nourished at the heart of Turkana in Lodwar. I did not end up here, this is home.

A selfie of me in a full Turkana regalia.

Many know Turkana for its climatic condition, and being sorrounded by three countries comes with its challenges, and that may be the other reason we are known for. Hey, we have our challenges but, allow me to introduce you to so many other enormous opportunities Turkana has to offer.

First, it's Kenya's largest county by land area.

1. Turkana is scientifically proven as the Cradle of mankind. This is where humanity began. Tobon'gu Lore- Come back home and know your roots. Also, Google Turkana Boy and catch-up with the history.
2. Endless Sun - it's always summer here and it's great for so many reasons. The greatest green energy potential - solar, windmills (there's a plant btw).
3. Enormous water aquifer in Lodwar- the potential currently being explored and utilized
3. Lake Turkana, I meeeean talk about water sports and being the world's largest permanent desert and alkaline lake (30-109m Deep)
5. Wildlife & Safari- We have a national park here, take a trip and check all the amazing animals with an amazing backdrop view.
6. Kapedo Waterfall - I know you're thinking ASAL and waterfalls don't match. I dare you to Google. Suggest a word better than spectacular.
7. Minerals- We have so so many and many still being discovered including oil, sapphire, gemstone and other precious stones among others. Are you interested now?
8. The best sunrises and sunsets. Let's not argue.
9. Hills and Valleys provide the best of nature.
10. Crater Lake inside Lake Turkana and  different species. No need to tell, just come. Better seen than told. This adds a boat ride to your fun trip.

11. Hotels such as Stegra Hotel and an amazing night life. Whether you're into live bands or DJs, you'd love it here.

12. Religion - Several churches and Mosques. We have a replica statue of Jesus like the one in Brazil.
13. Last but not least, definitely come for the people. The people serve good vibes anytime.
14. Oh, hey! You can travel by flight or by road. It's safe!

I could go on and on and on, but, all I'm saying is Turkana has grown in leaps and bounds thanks to devolution. We now have the opportunity to catch up with the rest of the country 60 years later since independence. With just 11 years of devolution, we can credit the  continued growth and development to the fruits of devolution. There's no stopping now. I believe in the unending resilience of the Turkana people and the current leadership in driving Turkana to the best of the next decade and infinity.

Hey, Turkana  is definitely open for business and more partnerships.

Tobon'gu Lore- Welcome Home!
